You can strike enemies before you come into contact with them to do a slight amount of damage to all the enemies in that group, and if their are nearby groups of enemies, they will join the fight as reinforcements. You get to explore the dungeon in real time as Alm or Celica, destroy crates and barrels to try to find some loot, open up treasure chests for some nicer treasures, and when you come into contact with an enemy, combat begins. 3D dungeons is the elephant in the room here, but it actually slides into Fire Emblem’s gameplay seamlessly. The game also brings some big game-play changes to the series, with added role playing elements and 3D dungeon exploring. There was a good amount of depth that I certainly appreciated. The two countries have their internal factions, their own problems, their own history. I found it more gritty, and for lack of a better term, it felt more ‘real’. The world feels a bit less fantastical compared to the world in Fates. Together, their separate quests tell the story of the world of Valentia. While Alm focuses on pushing an invading nation out of his country, Celica seeks to heal the land, which is suffering from famine and crop failure. Only one story is told across the game, but it is told from two viewpoints – Alm and Celica, the main characters of the game. Shadows of Valentia offers a more focused experience over Fire Emblem: Fates, the preceding game in the series.

Overall, it’s an absolutely fantastic entry to the series that adds a lot of new elements to the series while keeping it firmly grounded in tradition, so if you like strategy games, role playing games, or a combination of both, this is definitely a game that you need to check out.

It’s a remake of the 2 nd game in the series, Fire Emblem Gaiden, which was only released in Japan in 1992 – suffice to say, I never played the original, so this review won’t be comparing the two. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia released in North America on May 19 th, 2017, for the Nintendo 3DS.
